Here are some benefits to self-pay you may not be aware of:

Insurance companies require a diagnosis to justify medical necessity. They may not pay for all the reasons why a person is seeking counseling. I do not agree with this policy, and I find that ethically and clinically, people should have access to therapy they need no matter what. Often times people are being proactive about their health, and I want to honor that.

Insurance companies also put limits to length of care, or they can decide that you are not progressing fast enough in your therapy.

A diagnosis made for insurance stays on your files, and certain diagnoses can sometimes be used to deny life insurance coverage in the future.

  • There are many factors that determine the recommended length of therapy. Some of these include the severity of the symptoms, consistency of appointment attendance, and level of engagement in session and between sessions. Preparing for sessions and practicing the tools discussed in session can affect level of engagement. Generally I work with folx for at least 3 months. On average, people see me for 6-12 months. Whether to stop or continue treatment, frequency of appointments, are all things I discuss with clients throughout their treatment. We will collaborate on the these kind of decisions for your treatment. You absolutely have the right to end treatment when you decide to do so.

  • We will get to know one another during the initial session. It is your opportunity to ask me any questions about my experience, therapy approach and the therapy process. I will ask you questions in order to get a better understanding of the concerns bringing you to therapy. We will be able to identify some treatment goals, including frequency of appointments.
