Lyndsay Janzen, Licensed Professional Counselor

I have over 10 years experience, but did you know that’s not as important to your benefitting from therapy as much as the relationship with your therapist? It’s important to feel connected to your therapist.

Maybe you are intimidated by what might be asked of you in therapy. You might be worried that your therapist will be another person who will have expectations of you that you won’t be able to meet. Therapy often requires allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Sharing can be a gradual process as you become comfortable working with me and with the therapeutic process.

I strive to create the presence where you feel you can fully share your thoughts and feelings with me. This includes sharing if something about our work doesn’t feel right to you. That’s what I’m there for: you get to experience what it’s like to be assertive about your needs without someone judging you or dismissing your concerns.

I am interested in getting to know you and understanding your unique perspective. I firmly believe that each person deserves empathy and compassion simply for being a human being.

Worried you won’t know what to do? Or that what you try won’t work? I can give specific guidance on how you can maximize your engagement and investment into your therapy. Some of the things you try may not work for you and that’s normal. I have many different tools and strategies to offer you. Trial and error is part of the process of identifying what works for you. Mistakes and failure are normal parts of the learning process too. I won’t give up on you. And if for some reason, I don’t have what you need, I will point you in the direction of someone who does.

What to expect when working with me?

Collaboration

We will work as a team in meeting your needs and goals. I do not believe I hold all the answers. I guide folx and rely on their feedback as to what they need in therapy. You are an active participant and ultimately get to make the choices about whether you do what we discuss in therapy.

Holistic & Individualized

I view each person with whom I work as a whole person whose wellbeing depends on a number of things, such as physical health, social health, and psychological health. Each person’s “formula” for well-being differs, and I work with each person to discover and develop the formula that is right for them.

Emotions, Cognitions, and Somatic Focused

Emotions are part of the human experience. Many people develop unsustainable responses to their emotions and bodily sensations for a number of reasons that include cultural learnings, intergenerational trauma, and the survival response of avoiding pain and fear. It can be helpful to examine your relationship to your emotions, somatic sensations, and your thoughts as well as understand the relationship between them. This is something I often guide folx in doing. It is possible to learn new ways of responding and relating to your emotions and thoughts.

Evidenced Based Foundation

I have training in evidence-based approaches to human problems, such as CBT, mindfulness practices, iRest, and exposure therapies (Prolonged Exposure Therapy and Written Exposure Therapy for PTSD). These provide the foundation for the way I think about problems folx describe. These approaches also have tools I might offer you during our work together. This is not the end all be all to my practice. I do not adhere to these rigidly. Not everyone responds the same way to an approach. Each of these approaches have benefits as well as limits. Ultimately, what works best is what fits with an individuals’ needs and treatment goals.

I also have extensive experience, training, and skills to help address trauma. You may know or suspect that something from your past is continuing to influence your well-being and keeping you stuck. Relationships

For many, relationships can be a source of great stress and pain in their lives. I help people address relationships, past and present As humans, we learn how to be in the world within the context of relationships. Because some of the negative ideas and beliefs we have about ourselves happened from relational wounding, our healing must also happen within relationships.

Cultural Competency and Social Justice

I am continuing to work towards improving my cultural competency while working to decolonize my therapy practice. I am doing the work to understand systems and the injustices they perpetuate. I work towards these goals by participating in professional associations, consultation, trainings, and collaborating with others in the mental health community. In addition, I’ve come to understand the power of working in the community outside of my role as a therapist to achieve lasting change and reduce the harm and suffering that accompanies social injustices. I am actively working toward healing my ancestors’ wounds, as I believe I can make the most difference when I am investing in and taking care of myself to my best ability.
